Question: I am brand new to pickleball - how do I build my confidence?
Answer: Building confidence is a journey that takes some time. That being said, there are multiple ways you may build confidence. Some suggestions are listed below:
Repetition
One of the primary ways you can build confidence is through on-court repetitions. Quality repetitions are key, so it's advisable to get with a qualified instructor to give feedback on better stroke production.
Expand your skills and knowledge
Watch videos, take lessons, observe how other players play, listen to a podcast, or read blogs or articles. You'll gain insight into better strategies and tactics and advanced nuances of the game.
Celebrate small victories
Each time you make progress, no matter how small, acknowledge it. You can grow your confidence resume by adding little successes to the list.
Surround yourself with positivity
Words of affirmation from others are a confidence booster. Spend time with people who encourage and believe in you.
Show yourself grace
You'll make mistakes along the way. Don't let them get you down. Give yourself credit for trying something new and stepping out of your comfort zone.
Be active
Just by playing pickleball, you're getting physical activity, which has been shown to boost mood and self-esteem.
Visualize success
See yourself performing well in your mind's eye. Your central nervous system does not distinguish between real and imagined events. When you see yourself succeeding, your confidence will grow.
Building confidence takes time; it is not a one-time event. Put into practice the aforementioned themes and consider recording your progress in a journal, adding to your overall confidence resume.
